Positively Beautiful is a day dedicated to women living with HIV/AIDS. Over the past 10 years there have been amazing changes in the advancement of HIV/AIDS medications. These antiretroviral medications increase the quantity of millions of lives. It is these medications that has allowed for this day to happen. We no longer just survive HIV/AIDS, we live with it. This is a day about living.
The effect of these medications on the quality of life is variable, there are both positive and negative side effects. They greatly increase the immune system and help to prevent opportunistic infections. Yet some of the side effects are negative. Many of these side effects often can be treated under an experienced HIV/AIDS physician with prescriptions - but not all of them. Some of these medications cause visible physical changes - changes in fat distribution, hollowed out cheeks, visible veins, and sun sensitivities are common. These side effects are often not resolved by prescriptions. But there is a solution.
Through the support of M-A-C cosmetics AIDS Fund Good Spirits Program , local hairstylists, local restaurants and community contributions 25 local women will learn to erase the “look” of HIV/AIDS.
These 25 women will be given full makeovers combined with lessons in make up and hair that are specifically targeted at hiding the visible effects of the HIV/AIDS medications. Due to the generosity of Ajia Simone and Scott Sutherland for the use of their salon, Ahead of Style, these women will enjoy a day at the spa. They will have their hair colored, cut and styled and then go to makeup lessons from M-A-C cosmetics artists. The day will also be filled with music, food and gifts to make it even more special. Afterwards they will be showing off their new look at dinner downtown complementary of La Cocina Restaurant and Catering in Tucson’s Old Town Artisans.
This day would never have happened with out the generosity of Tucson. Local residents. From all those involved in Positively Beautiful, we thank you.
Beauty is more than skin deep but it is also part of the equation. When we feel good about ourselves we feel confident. When we feel confident we feel positively beautiful.
